The relay event on ‘Hunt Day’ at the Royal Windsor Horse Show was billed as an opportunity to ride in the same arena as one’s equestrian idols. And it did not disappoint – all my idols were there in the shape of the CL&C relay team: Alice Kent on Hippo, Rachael Morley on Stumpy, Julian Edge on Pig and Vanessa Lawes on Tilly (this was the running order) turned themselves out faultlessly in hunt dress - emotionally and vocally supported by Chef d’Equipe, the non-riding Kate Ford.
Each team comprised four members: one under 21, at least one of each sex and one over forty (gallantly none of the supporters could work out who qualified for that).
I arrived as the competitors were assembling, nervously and excitedly. I was struck by just how many horses and riders could fit in the adjacent warm-up arena. Our team were being attended by owners and supporters alike, all as proud as could be at the sight of four beautifully turned out horses and their equally immaculate jockeys.
Stephen Lambert, Chairman of the MFHA and judge at our forthcoming Puppy Show, and his wife Jane were there to support the Heythrop team, while Sarah Dunsdon, who often hunts with us on Pulborough days was there to support her daughter, Alice (a joint master of the Surrey Union next season)
There were fourteen teams entered – and the CL&C were drawn against the reigning champions, the Heythrop. Presently it started and we were on. With nerves of steel and ability to burn the two teams battled each other with nothing between them. They were neck-and-neck throughout, almost literally. The turn of speed was breathtaking and the baton passing exemplary. Suddenly, it was all over. The Heythrop pipped us at the post with one rail in hand (penalties were awarded for rails down).

It really was wonderful to see our lot on display. They were brilliant. Many congratulations to the four team members and their Chef d’Equipe. It was great to see so much support for our team, including Badger, Mrs Hare, Zoe Edge, Kate (Pig’s owner), Karen Calvert and Karen’s mum, Alice Kent’s mum Fiona and Caroline Rule. A thrilling day for all of us. Lee Dallyn's pictures are here.
