During the season, from September to March, we meet twice a week to trail hunt within the law. At present we have about 51 hounds (or, as we would say, ‘25.5 couple’) in Kennels bred for scenting in our varied country. We typically hunt weekdays, Saturdays and Bye Days Our Opening Meet is held annually at the end of October or beginning of November and this marks the start of our main season. We typically trail hunt on Wednesdays and Saturdays. As well as trail hunting we hold a range of social, community and non-hunting riding events throughout the year. Membership costs from just £10 a year. It’s a great way to keep up to date with Hunt and local community news. The Club has been a vital supporter of the Hunt for over 50 years. Funds are raised through a calendar of fun and social events. There’s something for everyone, from pub dinners to the annual horn blowing and holloa-ing competition night, trips to the Olympia Horse Show at Christmas and carol singing at the Stag Inn. The Club also runs a superb ‘Countryman’s Day’, a traditional country show with a shopping village, family dog show, ferrets, Hound visit and the ever popular terrier racing. It ranges across West Sussex and Surrey and includes large stretches of downland, heathland and woodland with the ground varying from sand and clay to chalk and flint. Our boundaries extend from Stoughton in the West to Pulborough in the East. The Northern boundary runs along the A29 and the Southern to the coast between Climping and Thorney Island. Our hunt country around Charlton and Goodwood, near Chichester, is some of England’s oldest and we still meet at Uppark where Hounds were kennelled in the 1600s. The jumps we encounter are mainly timber with some hedges and ditches. For riders, hunting offers a social, non-competitive riding discipline for any ability and age. Among our followers are nurses, teachers, retirees, children, farmers, journalists, students, small business owners and full time parents. We are as broad a group of people as you’ll meet anywhere. Some of us love to watch the Hound pack working the trail, others love the challenge of jumping everything possible, while many don’t jump at all. No matter what your age or your riding level, you can take up hunting. It is a great day out. Point-to-Point racing is an amateur version of National Hunt racing (sometimes known as Steeplechasing). The name Point-to-Point refers to the points of the church steeples denoting the course horses used to follow during a race through hunting country. Many hunt followers rode ‘pointers’ in their day and the ties between hunting and point-to-pointing are still strong. Parham, in West Sussex, is home to one of the great point-to-point courses where there has been racing for the last 65 years.
